Critical Mass is a world-wide form of direct action to fight for better cycling infrastructure in which people travel as a group at a set location and time. The idea is for people to group together to make it safe for each other to ride or wheel through their streets.
Critical Mass rides are informal and leaderless with no specific route. These events serve as a call to action to councils, governments and road planners to properly design in the needs and safety of all road users, instead of prioritising motor traffic above all else.
Chester Critical Mass Rides take place in Chester at 2:00 pm on the first Saturday of each month. Anyone and everyone can join in the fun – including little ones. Bike decorations and colourful outfits are most welcome!
Meet by the Lodge at the entrance to Grosvenor Park on Grosvenor Park Road not far from St Werburgh’s RC Church.
The rides are about four to five miles, taken at a slow pace, with the emphasis on fun and safety. After the ride (which takes an hour or so), you welcome to join the other participants for coffee or an ice cream.
We hope to see you soon!
There is some momentum behind a Facebook group called ‘Remove the Flintshire Barriers’ https://www.facebook.com/groups/flintshirebarriers that is leaning on Flintshire Council to do the smart thing and remove these barriers. I’ve seen this done on e.g. the Transpennine Trail. Sustrans are aware of the campaigning activity.
Have you spoken to Sustrans, David? I think they’re in charge of the paths and might be able to help. Seem to recall they made some bits narrow to stop people on motorbikes using them. They seem to promote people who can’t use two wheeled cycles etc so hopefully they could help you. https://www.sustrans.org.uk/
